You are quite far from Russian reality. Putin believed that he would defeat Ukraine in “a couple of days,” which, in his view, would be equivalent to seizing Crimea with the same consequences. Putin doesn't want a WW3 or even the restoration of the Russian Empire. He wants to stay in power for life and allow his oligarch buddies to continue stealing. But his real popularity began to decline after 2020, and as usual in such cases, the idea of a small victorious war to strengthen his ratings seemed good to him. And it is very likely that Russia will be in great turmoil after Putin's death.

This is in contrast to his public statements at the time.

Putin openly mused about how the conquest of Ukraine (which is still his goal), would be the launching point for bringing back down the air on Curtain.
