It was a huge step forward for Russia in several different ways. Mainly, it puts the wishes of the people of the Donbass on the side of Russia.

That's a major battle won in the eyes of the rest of the world, that is very aware of constant US wars of aggression to expand it's influence.

And of course US aggression contrasts so starkly with China's and Russia's methods.

He did this before legally annexing the Donbas region and making it officially Russian territory.
Up until now, only around 20% of the Russian army was fighting in Ukraine.
But now the Russian army will have the overwhelming manpower to defend Russia's Donbas territory and easily defeat the Ukrainian forces if they continue to attack.
