Vladimir Putin was snubbed by African leaders at a key summit in St. Petersburg on Thursday, heaping fresh humiliation on the Russian president.

Just 17 heads of state will take part in the second Russia-Africa summit this week – less than half of the 43 who attended the first in 2019.

The other 32 African nations will be represented by senior government officials or ambassadors.

Low turnout for the event has prompted the Kremlin to blame western powers undercutting with ‘outrageous’ interference as it seeks out diplomatic allies in its standoff with Ukraine.

Asked about the low number of attendees, Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov said: ‘This is absolutely blatant, brazen interference by the United States, France and other states through their diplomatic missions in African countries and their attempts to put pressure on the leadership of these countries in order to prevent their active participation in the forum.’

After being sanctioned by much of the western world and driven into isolation, Russia has spent much of the past year on a charm offensive in the global south, claiming the country’s future lies in Asia and Africa, where projected growth will present extraordinary economic opportunities.

The event comes after Russia destroyed Ukrainian grain warehouses on the Danube River after quitting the Black Sea grain deal, a UN- brokered pact that allowed the export of grain and other products from Ukraine through the Black Sea to overseas markets, many of them in Africa.

The deal was devised to alleviate soaring global food prices, and Russia blamed its collapse on the west blocking Russian exports of grain and fertilisers.

Moscow has attempted to downplay the issue in recent days by reassuring its African partners that it understands their ‘concern’ on the issue.

Nevertheless, some African leaders have spoken out angrily over Russia’s exit from the deal, fearing a possible civil backlash caused by rising grain prices at home.

Korir Sing’Oei, Kenya’s principal secretary for foreign affairs, last week tweeted ‘The decision by Russia to exit the Black Sea grain initiative is a stab on the back at global food security prices and disproportionately impacts countries in the Horn of Africa already impacted by drought.’

Because Russia has no access to international financial systems, Russia is finding it very difficult to sell its own grain and other products, so the little dictator decided to threaten to drop out of the grain deal, effectively threatening to starve Africa, unless the EU dropped some financial sanctions and now the Russians are surprised the African leaders are angry at them. Still more evidence no one should ever trust Russia.

Most of Africa has a warrant out for Putin's arrest.

Small wonder they won't attehis Pirate convention. There is another summit scheduled in Africa itself that Putin cannot attend because of their Wzrrants for his arrest.

Their grain is just another thing that has caused the rift.

While they are all talking about Russia:
Yes, several eastern European countries are worried so much Ukrainian grain will damage their own markets, so they are urging the EU to extend a ban on Ukrainian grain. The solution, I think, is to have large countries with lots of land, like the US and Canada, start growing enough grain to permanently put Russia out of the grain business and to make it a joint effort with Ukraine, so that Ukrainian grain can be shipped overland to an EU port and sold along with US and Canadian grain to the nations that need it.

While they are all talking about Russia:
Ukraine is kinda like Mexico is to the US.
Bolivia to Brazil.

A place of cheap wages and goods. Illegal immigrants abound. Low quality products that are usually "good enough" for what you had in mind.

A great place to visit but you don't want to live there. Poverty is king there....so are "gangs" and organized crime all fighting over who gets to be king of the trash pile....kinda like Puerto Rico is today.

So it's little wonder why firm boundaries are desired and limits on goods/people imported from Ukraine are wanted.

It doesn't negate the serious nature of what is happening there...or what Ukraine could become.
Ukraine has the potential for being another Taiwan or Japanese success story.

Mainland China wants Taiwan for its wealth....the banks in Taiwan hold enough cash to buy Mainland China. No small feat considering they started out as exiles.

Japan, at one time, was extremely impoverished. Limited resources and agricultural potential. Now they are an economic powerhouse of high quality vehicles and electronics with an international footprint.

Ukraine has the same potential as these two nations IF they can get rid of the corruption and other crime that stifles the trade with other nations. They have a huge amount of resources that can be leveraged and a skilled, educated workforce that can be employed.
But the corruption leftovers from Russia and ongoing Corruption from Russian oligarchs has been holding them back significantly.

Ukraine signaling they wish to join the EU is ultimately Russia's problem with Ukraine...everything and anything else is a smokescreen for their issues. Russia has been skimming off of Ukrainian's GDP for decades. Making Oligarchs filthy rich while slowly degrading the nation.

However Billionaires really don't care about all the "little people" who die defending their income source. They never have and never will.

It is easy to draw lines from afar but I think it is time to stop the block building. Russia won´t disappear and we need to get along with each other. And if you want to support Ukraine, you better go invest there, there is huge potential.

That may be true but Ukraine has also its own Oligarchs.

Actually, Russia is disappearing, just as the USSR and the Warsaw Pact disappeared, so if Russia wants to get along with the civilized world, as you say, it will have to become civilized, and the first step in doing that is to completely withdraw from Ukraine; than other issues can be discussed.

Yeah....it's almost over for Russia. They are going broke fast....too fast. Their war chests were seized...they are having a difficult time with any allowed and normal trade...

Russia just announced yet another massive overhaul of their banking practices including "pillow banking" and Sharia Law Banking....

Yet another signal they are getting fairly desperate for cash and have no loan options.

What if we apply that on western countries that do attack other nations?

The Deniers do not want to play now that their third Kyiv Nazi army is sinking beneath the waves. Now that the US and EU have publicly admitted that the vaunted offensive is a non event , there is a deafening silence . Ya , Boo , Sucks, girls .

You must be from Serbia.

Because all the Russian mil-bloggers have been decrying how they are losing.

At first, what is an oligarch? He is a big capitalist. He can be good for the country and he can be bad for the country. The term doesn´t include a judgment. You are about to label all the bad ones Russian for no reason whatsoever. I brought up Zelensky to show that Russian origin doesn´t mean Russian automatically.
