30 years working in hospitals and this is the first time I ever heard of this. This is a condition caused by severe brain damage due to stroke, dementia, psychosis trauma, etc. The person is so impaired they cant recognize their own family, lost their personality and all memory. Then suddenly it all comes back, everything, and they are normal. A day or two later they die. The only explanation is the mind can exist without a functioning brain. Thats what we call the soul. These cases are well documented. So there is a soul and an afterlife.

technically, the soul of man is the combination of his spirit and body.

Genesis 2:7
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

The spirit of man existed prior to entering the body and are the offspring of God. We all existed before being born into this mortal life (see my post on Did you exist before you were born into this life).

Man became a living soul when the spirit entered the body. When the spirit exits the body, the body will die. This is why Jesus died after he gave up the ghost (or his spirit).. Some have had out of body experiences where the spirit temporarily leaves the body but then reenters the body. So I think we agree on this.
