Original Story: Progressives want to tighten screws beyond Manchin and Sinema

Progressives say pressure on Democratic centrists over ending the filibuster needs to move beyond Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema(D-Ariz.).

Manchin and Sinema have earned headlines — and barbs from the grassroots — by putting brakes on filibuster reform and, in Manchin’s case, by opposing sweeping voting rights legislation.
But some on the left see the pair of liberal antagonists as giving cover to other moderates who are in the way, but who have not yet come to the surface with all the attention on the two most visible holdouts.

It seems like there’s definitely a handful of senators who are hiding behind Joe Manchin’s skirts right now,” said Sawyer Hackett, executive director of People First Future, a political action committee started by former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro. “We can’t afford to just sit back and not turn up the pressure on them.

Potential targets to tighten the screws aren’t hard to spot.

One could be Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who irritated progressives by hugging Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) last year during confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, former President Trump’s pick to succeed liberal hero Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

So, it appears that the Democrat circular firing squad might be starting in earnest, one wonders what the full hit list of Congress Critters-D might look like when all is said and done. The resistance to altering the filibuster by certain Democrat Senators is a boon for Democrats who would undoubtedly regret any changes to it down the road. However it seems that “progressives” still haven’t learned a fundamental lesson that history has been trying to teach them, JUST BECAUSE THE DEMOCRATS WON AN ELECTION DOESN’T MEAN YOUR IDEOLOGY HAS MAJORITY SUPPORT, IT DOESN’T, only 24% of Americans self-identify as “liberals”.

It never ceases to amaze how the far left continues to believe that just because the Democrats won an election that it means that they now have a mandate to foist their funky ideas on the entire population. The far left of the Democrat Party is on the path to ONCE AGAIN ensure that the GOP gets back into power sooner rather than later.
It's not a "circular firing squad", it's how things are done. They will try to convert other members to their viewpoint. Concessions will be offered, deals made, that kinda stuff.

We aren't talking about republicans here, you know
It is when it becomes an exercise in attempting to demean the character of Senators in their own party based on those Senators views not falling squarely into line with those of party activists.

Honest debate is one thing, attempting to characterize Manchin as some sort of “traitor”, “stooge” or as “anti-democratic” is quite another.

Honest debate is one thing, attempting to characterize Manchin as some sort of “traitor”, “stooge” or as “anti-democratic” is quite another.
Media may be doing that, I don't think other senators are.

Manchin is the most powerful republican in the senate right now.
Why would you characterize him as a “Republican”? if anything he’s one of the few Democrat Senators that’s trying to keep the Democrats from shooting themselves in the head.
Thwarting the democratic agenda and making the senate unable to pass anything big only serves the republicans and no one else.
It seems it’s less about “Thwarting the democratic agenda” and more about keeping the Democrats from falling off the left edge of the planet again.

He represents the center of the Democrat party, if they’re smart they’ll listen to him and work towards compromise, if not they’ll likely get nothing accomplished except firing up the GOP base and getting their asses handed to them in 2022.
There is no compromise with the republicans. The only reason they even come to the bargaining table is to waste valuable time haggling over legislation they will never vote for no matter what.
Er.. um… compromise is a TWO WAY STREET and capitulation isn’t on it. Manchin appears to at least understand that, it’s too bad the extremes in both parties don’t.

The Democrats DO NOT HAVE A MANDATE TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT, they won one election, if they want to win a second one they had better learn to start listening to Manchin and start negotiating in good faith to figure out deal points that will be acceptable to most voters. I haven’t seen them doing much of that, they seem to think that most people see things exactly the same way as they do.

Granted the Republicans aren’t doing much good faith negotiation either but the fact of the matter is the Democrats aren’t giving them many reasons to do so.
Our current crop of republicans are the most ruthless cutthroat back-stabbing bastards that ever held office in this country. They are absolutely counting on democrats to play nice and seek compromise.
The “current crop of republicans” may be as you characterize them to be, that’s of course a subjective evaluation. I suspect though that what they’re counting on is that the Democrats WON’T seek compromise in good faith and thus give them a good excuse to dig in their heels and claim that the Democrats are ineffective and extremists that are incapable of governing.

Same script that happens every election cycle, the crime family in power does the “take it or leave it” act and those in the minority respond accordingly, leading to the pendulum of power swinging back in the other direction.

It’s the same exact behaviour that the Democrats displayed during the Trump Regime when the Republicans held both chambers of Congress.
You're acting like democrats can offer the republicans something they value more than a defeat.
They can it’s there job since it’s incumbent upon the party in power to find a way to get their “agenda” enacted, it’s the minority’s job to try and stop them while at the same to representing the views of their constituents.

The ball is in the Democrats court, that’s why people gave them the power, can they figure out how to use it or will they just whine about how the minority isn’t conceding to their demands? After all, the minority still represents the will of 10’s of millions of American voters, they’re not expected to roll over just because the majority represents the will of a few million more.
If whining is weakness and being ruthless is out of bounds it seems there is no acceptable way for democrats to counter a bunch that sees insurrection as a legitimate political tactic.
So if I’m understanding your point of view correctly, the only two alternatives for the governing party are weakness or ruthlessness? Seems to completely discount the “middle way” approach endorsed (and sometimes used effectively) by past Presidents.

Well that certainly explains why our current political system is in complete disarray and why neither party can be seen as anything close to competent when it comes to governing.
The middle is a graveyard of half-measures, poison pills and deals with the devil that can make any good idea into an ineffective pile of crap.

It’s not other Senators that I’ve seen, Senators tend to be more respectful of the collegial environment than that. It’s the Democrat party activists/donors/et al. And their lap dogs in the media that are doing it.

Result ends up being the same though, one end of the party assasinating the character of the other end.

From the OP link:

But what some Democrats might have missed is that eight Democrats in total voted against an amendment from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to ignore a Senate parliamentarian’s ruling that the wage increase couldn’t be included in the budget reconciliation package.

Progressives need only ask themselves this:

If the Republicans win back the Senate next year, will they still support the removal of the Fillibuster?

What am I saying? That would require the progressives to do some navel-gazing and be honest with themselves.
I do not believe shit anymore if Repubs win unless they do what is promised.

Respectfully, I used to be the same. I just couldn't grasp why the media and the Left (but I repeat myself) were so willing to openly burn down their credibility in their attempts first to defeat Trump and THEN to illegally remove him from an office he WON in 2016.
It just made no sense to me. I guess I was still one of those who hadn't grasped the real level of corruption, even evil, that resides in DC. I struggled to believe it for the first couple of years of the crusade against the Bad Orange Man. Then, I couldn't deny it any longer even though it was a frightening truth I had to accept. They had made it clear by the middle of 2020 that the virus hysteria was going to be used to help them change voting rules - illegally, BTW - so they WOULD WIN.

They began running "news" pieces to prepare the way for how they would accomplish it and then they followed through and put a F**KING TURNIP into the Oval Office. Over 900 Americans gave legal depositions about irregularities, inconsistencies, and even solid evidence of vote totals that were PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to have been tallied in the span of time they claimed the votes were counted. Like all other details, this was mocked but it was the first time in our history that so many were willing to risk PRISON to be heard.

NOT ONE COURT, including SCOTUS, tried to do anything to tamp down the fire and reassure voters, let alone disprove any of the claims. ALL were dismissed. The media began mocking and they all tried to turn the page. To this day they're still fighting tooth and nail to stop ANY kind of reckoning that would restore the faith in the system that was destroyed for tens of millions of Americans since 11/3/20.

All of that tells me that those in power in DC have decided they will not relinquish their power again. They have taken steps that they KNOW will cause them to lose, and badly, beginning in 2022. They may be evil but no one accused them of stupidity. IF they were willing to do such damage to their electoral chances, they must have a plan they believe will make them untouchable. Last year Nancy Pelosi made a snarky, vicious comment about Trump's chances in the election. It was very revealing. "Oh, he's going, whether he knows it or not"

I think Manchin and Sinema and maybe a few others understand how close America is to coming apart at the seams and beginning an internal war.

I don't count on the Republicans doing what they say. I was remarking on the inconsistent and hypocritical mindset of the left.
I only count on them doing whatever is expedient for their own careers. That's where pressure from the Trump element of the party comes in. ANY Representative that depends of Republican votes who refuses to support Impeachment efforts against the Turnip-in-Chief, will be shown the error of their ways, quickly. The slow-roll BS is OVAH...

The filibuster needs to end NOW. There will be no other chance.

And the court needs to be expanded

NOW

NOW

Chuck U. Schumer doesn't want to end the filibuster for a real good reason. The filibuster allows the D's the ability to maintain the illusion of unanimity in the party.

And there aren't enough votes in the Senate to approve expanding the court, that's why it isn't going to happen. Smart D's know that they don't have a permanent lock on the Congress, and the day will come soon enough for the R's to expand the court again to negate such a bullshit move.

Still enough sane adults in the D party.

That may be changing

That may be changing

Indeed we will.

But I see this proposal as something akin to the "Pro Act" which would eliminate the Right to Work in America.

Popular with the D leadership, but they realize that it would be electoral suicide so they'll pass.

Back in 2007 and 2008, the Democrat Congress passed a lot of bullshit laws- that Dubya quickly vetoed.

But most of that was all dead in the water in 2009 after W left office. The D's in Congress didn't even put labor law reform up to a vote, as they knew the vote would be "for real".

And its the same with this.

And you can pound sand NOW. Fucking Lush
We shall see. Republicans have given plenty of evidence for the need to both kill the filibuster and expand the Court.

For all the power that Mancin and Senima are enjoying now… if they do nothing they will soon have none… if they’re even in the Senate
