In the Bible we read of the priesthood through Aaron and the Melchizedek priesthood. Jesus seems to have found priesthood authority essential else why would he call twelve apostles? We also read of other offices of the priesthood in scripture such as elders, priests, deacons, and seventy. According to the apostle Paul, there was to be priesthood authorities on earth in all ages until we come to a unity of the faith and unto the perfect man in Christ. Here is what he has said:
Ephesians 4:11-15
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
What is the justification for not having apostles and prophets? Jesus clearly called twelve apostles to continue after his ministry and Paul has taught they should continue for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry and for edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. So why do some teach that apostles and prophets are no longer needed? Shouldn't we still see apostles and prophets in the true Church of Jesus Christ today?
