1. In the sweat of your face you will eat bread.

2. Six days shall you labor (get all sweaty) but the seventh is the Sabbath of the Lord.

3. Assumes that you are tired from all that sweaty work and actually need rest. If not, you will have energy to burn, and resting will be frustrating and tortuous for you.

4. Jes' sayin'. ;)

Well, Shabbat, is to rest but also to celebrate G-d, to praise and be thankful for our creation "A taste of the world to come" as written in the Talmud. I understand that many people today aren't out in the fields working hard and there may be many days of rest per se. The reflection and commitment to G-d is unique though. We should all be thanking Judeo-Christianity for promoting these days of rest even as society sadly moves away from them.

"In the sweat of your face" means to give it all you've got. "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with (all) your might." If one does this, whatever their job is, they will be ready for a day of rest at the end of the week.

The old covenant Sabbath was loaded with tiring travel and rituals. Jesus changed all that. "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." He raised it to its intended meaning, rest and repose, not travel and ritual.

The Sabbath is GOD'S time, not yours. If you neglect your time with God you are not honoring GOD'S Sabbath

Shabbat Shalom Woodenutz. And try to respect His Created beings today

I dispense nothing but good will on these forums on the Sabbath, as I do any other day. 😇

God rests on the Sabbath and gives us the day off as well.

I'll try not to kill any animals today as well although I do plan on eating some beef stew later.

God and I work together all week, but we go our separate ways on the Sabbath, he to his resting place, me to mine.

Except you repent you will go your separate ways on the Day of Judgement

God is calling you but you are stubborn and self willed

Seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and HIS righteousness

the heavens deemed their creation, life and garden earth their sabbath to be kept holy ...

such is the failure of all three desert religions - that use the heavens for their purposes, as a day off work for rest - than theirs for the heavens.

I do that all week long, but I rest on the Sabbath. 😇

Garden Earth was created as a "pleasure garden" for the angels, but they screwed up, thus a new paradigm.

you are a sad case, christian ... the desert religions contribute as much as anything else the destruction of garden earth and seems through laziness as even a greater sin than their simple disobedience.

You aren't qualified to judge me. ;)

What travel? What rituals?
Commanded 'convocations' (gatherings) to hear the Law read (rituals). Same today, people pack up the family and travel to church to hear sermons. Some traveled great distances to synagogues.

no travel is commanded. In fact, Jewish law limits how far one can travel on the sabbath, so any concern you have about "travel" is silly. And you think that going to synagogue and praying makes the day "loaded with rituals"? Is eating lunch one of those rituals? How about sitting and reading a book. Is that a ritual?

What if you live too far away from synagogue, do you stay home?

Here are the rituals you do in preparation for yet more rituals on the Sabbath day. The Jewish Sabbath day, beginning Friday evening is filled with rituals. When do you find time to actually rest?

?

It seems to me that Jewish life is like living on a hamster wheel, every aspect of life is a proscribed ritual. When do you, especially mothers with young children, get a break?

I have a Jewish family with two young children as tenants. Rachel, the mother, is completely overwhelmed and often needs her mother to visit and help her. Worse yet the family hosts others on the Sabbath day, meaning even more work for Rachel on Friday and Sabbath. To compensate for the stress Rachel overeats and is morbidly obese. I believe her husband wants the prestige of hosting Sabbath dinner. If I was their Rabbi I would advise them to step back a bit for her sake.

yes. But those who care make sure to move close enough. That's why prices in Jewish communities are driven up -- the demand is constant but the radius around a synagogue which marks a maximum distance doesn't change so the supply is very limited.

did you actually look at that list? That list is about preparing your home for the sabbath by cleaning it. Sorry that this seems an undue burden. I find that washing the dishes makes the whole kitchen feel cleaner. Nothing in that list is a required ritual, nor a pre-requisite for a ritual (except for the fact that you need to have bread prepared for dinner).

Except none of that is a prescribed (trust me, you don't mean "proscribed"). That is a list put out by a group to help you keep track of errands and tasks. None is required.

that's nice. I'm glad she has her mom. I know women with significantly more children who don't need any help. So?

Some moms employ nannies, some au pairs, some have baby nurses, some have cleaning help. What's your point? That life can be more demanding or overwhelming for some people than others?
