They also knew the Homestead Act and the Railroad Acts were going to pass; no reason to stay. Whether some modern era snowflakes like that or not is just too bad. In the 1862 elections Lincoln's faction only held on by the barest of margins, due entirely to his military control of the ballot boxes in the border states; his faction lost votes all over the Midwest and Atlantic states because many voters thought he was going to free the slaves and allow them to immigrate north and they would have to compete with cheap black labor.
