The biggest problem the left has with the whole AGW argument is the lack of any real solution beyond "stop carbon emissions". They don't want natural gas because of fracking, they don't want nuclear, wind farms kill birds and are eyesores, hydrorelectric dams require dams which mess up local ecosystems, solar isn't even close to generating enough power to supply our needs, and almost none of our industrial infrastructure is set up for anything but carbon-related energies (e.g. trucks and ships use oil-based fuels manufacturing plants use power from coal fired steam generators). Even if a solution is found, it would be decades before we could have enough of it in place to make a dent in any impact humans are having, in which case you're still left with convincing people and governments to go through the expanse with no immediate payoff.
