Question: Why did Israel attack the USS_Liberty in 1967? Survivors of the attack still want to know.
Anyone interested wants to know too.
For ME it boils down to one question: Did Israel ask again, between spotting the Liberty at about 6AM, and attacking at 2 PM, ask the US again to confirm they had no ship in the war zone? Israel declares a war zone, just as any reasonable country at war. A temporarily defined area that entry should be coordinated.
The US was known to be flying off the coast of Israel, spy planes. They were not attacked.
The Liberty arrived after the first day of fighting, it had not been in the area before, it just suddenly appeared. The US Navy had informed Israel there were none of their ships within 100 NM of the coasts of Egypt or Israel, yet an interloper was there.
This is from a report I can no longer find and did not download but was a CIA/NSA investigation.
The Liberty was ordered specifically out of the area at 2330 EST or 6:30 AM. Why? What triggered that order from Washington? For a COMMUNICATIONS ship not to receive an order, seems weird to me. It is agreed that the order reached he Liberty after 2 PM, or after the attack.
The US (leaders of the free world) did not have good relations with Israel at this time. None of the IAF was supplied from the US.
At 2 PM the ship was again (remember first at 6AM) still just lolly dallying in the region. Knowing what I think of the US, Israel asked, the US said they’d check. The ship was still not moving from the area, eight hours later.
LBJ was known to use bait to get involved in foreign wars. He did it in Vietnam with the Maddox. The US had no bases or friends in the western middle east, protecting Israel from Egypt would have been a perfect reason to put boots on the ground after the Liberty was attacked, if it was attacked by Egypt.
Questions: Did Israel ask again for confirmation of ships in the region? What was the response?? Why does an order from the JCS take over 8 hours to reach the destination.
The CO of the T-boats did see the flag and approached asking by signal light that the Liberty identify itself. The Liberty, being a ship of the mighty USA, told the T-boats to identify themselves. From the same report I read, the captain ordered their guns to fire on the T-boats. Eight sailors died from the IAF strafing, the remainder from the one torpedo that hit the ship.
Why did Israel bomb the USS Liberty in 1967? Was it to cover up the massacre of the 400 Egyptian prisoners of war? Did the US pursue it? ... Peace Prize
