Those drugs were prescribed by doctors who were deliberately lied to by Purdue about the addictiveness of Purdue's drugs.

It was all about increasing sales, the public health be damned.

Purdue created the epidemic, and when they were finally stopped (too late), the demand for opioids didn't. So like good little capitalists, the cartels stepped.
