Interesting Sunday morning discussion and we came to

should we save every species.

For me
that brought to mind the Delta smelt.

There are so many other examples.
Are we supposed to feel compelled to save every species
that may drift off into evolution

More importantly
and who gets to decide.

The Earth is a lovely planet
but it's going to get worse before it gets better.

My family has enjoyed
Delta smelt
on crackers
and soft cheese for gener nations.

I don't know if that taints me or not
Please pass the capers and horseradish.

I will remain silent and able at the family supper table. 😎

I’m a big smelt fan coming from Michigan obviously. As a species I think as a whole we should do better for the rest of the other species on the planet. We are the ones dictating their survival basically. This isn’t about smelt just the bigger picture.

It's complicated There are some who say our species is "destroying the planet through climate change" and they welcome the end of us.

We are perhaps too stupid for our own good. Greed destroys all and makes weak men even more abusive and weaker.

Our species has been destroying the planet and it’s other species for a while in other ways than global warming. But in general, I agree with your post.

Agree with what aspect though? This isn't what I'M saying lol, it is what some radicals say. Weak radicals who hate humans.

Surprising view from you.

If you were honest for a change, then you would admit that the Republican Party has been very destructive to the environment, especially Dubya and Trump and their war on the EPA.

I have a negative attitude towards wild carnivorous animals like it would not hurt my feelings one bit if overnight our planet became totally devoid of bears, wild cats & wild canines. One can bet the farm if our planet was overrun with Allosaurus, Raptors & T. Rex creatures there would be a LOT LESS animal rights activists & anti hunters for sure.

It's very simple.
Human's evolved to survive in the world that was for millions of years.
If you allow the environment to drastically change, then you risk humans no longer being able to survive.

For example, we are using massive amounts of pesticides so that we make more money from farming, but that ignores that it is insects that decompose compost, pollenate, etc.
So we do not realize that we are heading to massive starvation caused by our own greed and ignorance.
If we succeed in killing off all the pollinators, then there will be very little for us to eat.

I disagree.
Everywhere "wild carnivorous animals" are eliminated by humans, then the herbivores over populate, wipe out the vegetation, and the result is species extinction.
You need to keep the balance, and the only way to do that is to leave it alone.
The carnivores maintain the balance as they always have for hundreds of millions of years.

When species that have done well for tens of millions of years suddenly all go extinct, that is time for concern that risky changes are being made that we need to understand better.

They're not all worth saving. Hell if we were to follow nature's example where 99% of all the species that have ever lived are now extinct where would that leave us?

I was using smelt
as a metaphor for solar energy.

We are absolutely too stupid for our own good.

Point of fact, it was the GOP that started the environmental movement, and it is their members who are, demographically and statistically are more likely to be out hunting, fishing and camping.

The EPA has become a corrupt and incompetent organization. It stifles growth, as well as not doing a good job managing resources. It is basically a grift and laundering operation to enrich folks on the left, who don't really give two shits about people and living in harmony with nature.

They want to get rid of civilization, and make bank doing so.

Making the claim the the EPA is good for the health of the environment and American health, is about as logical as claiming all of the organization dedicated to homelessness is good for those who are without a place to live. It is absurd on its face.
