Yesterday, or maybe the day before, there was a thread posted about increasing numbers of people shunning family/disinviting them from Thanksgiving dinner over the outcome of the recent election. I replied that this was an oft-overlooked form of political extremism, which got a bunch of laugh reacts from people who, presumably, thought I was joking. I wasn't. I reckon political extremism is behavior that is unreasonable and out of the ordinary, motivated by a person's politics. Think about this for a second, cutting off friends and family isn't normal, healthy behavior. If we did it because of religious differences, the behavior would be described as cultish. And yet, when it comes to politics, nobody seems to bat an eyelash. I guess my question is, how do you define political extremism? Do you think there are any examples of it that we often miss?

Political extremism involves the desire to expand one's ideology at all costs.

At least in this forum, It also means Democrat.

Political extremism will no doubt be defined differently in different countries/political systems.

In America, IMO it is defined as demanding one's political desires and opinions to become iron clad law and enforced as law against all opposition. It disregards all Constitutional protections and security of liberty and unalienable rights that do not fit the agenda we support, most especially the right to protest what the government does. It is government dictating what rights the people will have and those who oppose the leadership can be punished for any opposition. It short it is totalitarianism manifested by whatever political group/party a person endorses.

And yes it is far too often manifested by shunning, ostracizing, cutting off any who disagree with our political perspective or who refuse to hate who we hate, etc.

Because I refused to buy into the Gospel According To Fauci, because I refused to submit to the nonsense and follow the herd, my only daughter disowned me 4 years ago. I'm 77, and I have an 80 year old friend who had the same thing happen to him by his only daughter.

Point is that for the sake of political dogma, humans will certainly reject friends and family, IN THESE CRAZY TIMES WE LIVE IN. Whether that was part of the plan or not I can only speculate. I suspect it was. Alienation and destruction of society is a goal of our many enemies, and evil in general.

As to your thread title, I always liked Barry Goldwater's quip: Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.

Well it's not normal. And it's not good. And I think a lot of people fail to recognize it for what it is.
