The Berlin public prosecutor's office has searched the federal headquarters of the Alternative for Germany. It is allegedly about investigations into ex-party leader Meuthen, accountability reports and campaign financing.
Since this morning, the Berlin public prosecutor's office has been conducting a search of the premises of the federal headquarters of the Alternative for Germany, without any prior inquiry having been made to the AfD regarding the matters to be clarified.
The background to this is the AfD donations affair, report NDR and WDR with reference to parts of the search warrant. Specifically, it is about the election campaign of a controversial association for the party. From the point of view of the Berlin public prosecutor's office, there were indications that the AfD had made false statements in the accountability reports to the Bundestag in the years 2015 to 2018, the two media outlets write.
Federal spokeswoman Dr. Alice Weidel sees this action as a "highly unusual and extremely disproportionate measure to intimidate the AfD as the most important opposition party in Germany, which is now only three percent away from the so-called chancellor's party, the SPD, in the polls."

Federal spokesman Tino Chrupalla adds, "If the public prosecutor's office had asked us in advance, we would have answered accordingly and provided documents. The fact that complete hard drives, mailboxes and file folders are now being copied can only be seen as a targeted action to restrict the security and integrity of our internal party data. However, we will not let this divert us from our clear political course for our country, which the current federal government is visibly managing into the abyss."
