Phoolan Devi (Hindi: फूलन देवी, Phūlan Dēvi) (10 August 1963 – 25 July 2001), popularly known as "Bandit Queen", was an Indian bandit and later a Member of Parliament. Born to a low caste family in rural Uttar Pradesh, Phoolan grew up in extreme poverty, was subjected to child abuse by her older husband, and upon becoming a social pariah, took to a life of crime and then a life of political activism (source of information: Wikipedia).
Devi is considered a champion of populism and progressive politics and has become a romantic figure signifying social interest in gender-related social dialogue.
We can think of Devi's headband, saris, and wristbands as new age leftist politics symbols of self-determined 'social couture,' which is both refreshing and surprising to an otherwise culturally-suffocating nation (India).
Identifying couture items symbolizing pro-humanist discussions can help us discriminate between style and substance and between propaganda and flowery, which is important for Eastern politics.
This is why/how Phoolan Devi has become something like a comic book superhero, so we need to seize her 'celebrity' status to understand how mob psychology can actually be used for social mobilization, since this year America might elect its first-ever female president (Hillary Clinton).
Is how we look related to how we negotiate?
