From 1955 to 1995, TV time exploded while weekly reading time declined. “Competition from television turned out to be the most evident cause of the decline in reading,” the authors of that study concluded.

Its a lie the wokeism caused the decline in reading.
By Media Matters for America | WASHINGTON – On her July 20 broadcast, Fox News host Laura Ingraham denigrated recruitment efforts by the U.S. Defense Department labeling it ‘wokeism” and attacking the LGBTQ community saying that the U.S. military is using an LGBTQ agenda.

nothing makes me madder, it's all Biden fault, don't you know. It's all the democrat's fault, don't you know!!
She had a show on tonight with republicans, I kid you know and she blamed the decline in reading on wokeism.
She's lies all the time.

I have known people who say they have not read a book since high school. Personally, I think it is tragically sad. I cannot imagine not reading books.

Does she lie as much as Rachel?

Do you have a more current link? One that is not pay-walled as well?

This is a media concern, not a political concern.

She doesn't lie all the time, but she is lying about wokeism. I don't want to get sued.

...but I have to imagine that more people are reading more content overall than ever before. We read shit all day long on our phones. We digest more words per day than our parents ever did.

But do we REALLY digest the words, or do so many of us merely ingest them? Look at how abysmally inept some of the folks here are at communicating clearly and effectively. What makes you think they are any better at understanding language than they are at expressing themselves with it?

:)

I never thought this song would actually become a right wing campaign ad.

For far too many everything has to be about politics in some way or the other. And as to the actual story, I can not read it either. Tough to read when the sources will not allow it.

I may not read as many books as I once did but I still read a lot. I've complained here many times, that I am not wasting time watching some stupid video, that if you want me to comment, find a link I can read.

I have known people who say they have not read a book since high school. Personally, I think it is tragically sad. I cannot imagine not reading books.

And yet some people, even some of our leaders, brag about not read as if it is a point of pride.

I'll give most videos a try. I limit to about five minutes, max. They better be better than the average MSM report, packed full of information I don't already know, and I prefer videos that have links in the description, that I go search for and read sourcing on, while the video is playing in the background, that way, I can verify the contents of what I am, "watching/listening too." It is why, I haven't turned on the TEE VEE in months, not for news anyhow.

Nothing on there can be sourced, fact checked or verified. I have seen this dumb-ass CNN propaganda video twice now on this site, where a reported even tells the viewer, up front, they have no way to verify the claims of a Ukrainian reporter, that what they are about to show American viewers, are indeed, poorly trained, unequipped Russian troops, who don't have boots, guns, bullets, grenades, etc.

IOW, the CNN reporter might as well be telling you, "what we are about to show you, is a lying piece of propaganda, only an idiot would believe, here, watch this you gullible fools,"

Yeah, time much better spent reading and in silent contemplation, for sure.

Sure! But far less information. And not a book, but snippets of words and small amounts of information.

Its like everything else. Baseball's popularity has waned and one of the chief causes, supposedly, is that the games take too long. I heard Mark Cuban the other day stating that his son doesn't watch basketball. He watches basketball highlights that are packaged by one of the streaming services. In 7 minutes he can get an entire game's worth of information.

Personally, I think there are more serious factors involved; 2 of them to be exact.

I think we are less curious as a nation. This would be demonstrated through the popularity of admittedly biased news organizations. The reason you pick up a book is curiosity. You want the perspective of one author.

Secondly (and more serious perhaps) is that anything that doesn't have a guarantee relative to "risk", is no longer going to fly in our society. I think Baseball's biggest problem is one that Soccer recognized sometime back...people want a payoff for the time they invest. So some leagues came up with the "golden goal" that ensured there would be a winner. The NHL did this I believe or at least did it for a while. In the back of one's mind, when they buy a ticket to a baseball game, they could be there four 4 hours and see a 1-0 game. I used to read the Janet Evanovich books religiously. I'd pre-order them and pick them up the day they were released. On successive editions of her novels, the ending was so corny that I suspect JE got tired of writing and was told (or decided) to end the book ASAP. So I have stayed away.

There is another thread on here about how boys are losing out and not getting the education they need.

This might be part of the problem.

Want smart kids? Read to them when they are small. Get them books of their own when they are bigger. Get them a library card and take them there often.

Baseball died in 2020, the first time they chalked "BLM" on the mound in an MLB park. The first time I saw this, I turned off baseball and will not go back until it becomes a sport again, rather than a political shitshow.

:)

"I think we are less curious as a nation. " I think that is the crux of it.

Here is a question for those reading this thread. Do you use the internet exclusively for politics (sites like this one included), porn, sports scores and news?

Do you ever just search out information on something you are curious about? Like history? Or science? The amount of information at our fingertips is mind-boggling. And yet, it is wasted.

Does reading "To kill a mocking bird" prepare you for life? Does it make you more knowledgeable about the world around you? I think not.

The internet has become my exclusive sourse for porn, and has increased the amount that I read. Unfortunately, the time I once spent reading novels and history has mostly been replaced with reading dirty stories.
