The "charlatans" were the Republicans under Ronald Reagan, and the Conservatives under Brian Mulroney who told those lies. But the response of the Canadian government was to provide retraining for those displaced by off-shoring, and loss of front line manufacturing jobs. The USA did NOTHING for its workers. Just left them to drink, drugs, and depression - the diseases of despair.

Canada did the opposite. The provided income supports and training for those wanting to start new businesses. Increased minimum wages for low skill workers, and tax credits for new manufacturing businesses setting up.
