And, in classical warfare, this is strictly true. You win a war by eroding the human and logistical resources of your enemy until they lose the will or the ability to fight.

But, what you do do when the enemy has little to no resources to wage war other than deep pockets, fanatical followers, and a strongly developed propaganda arm?

In that scenario, enemy deaths favor the enemy. Every death is a martyr, every conflict a victory, every time you lose, you gain support.

Hamas knows this and pushes civilians into the line of fire to make headlines and propaganda points -- the terrorists become the victims and, ultimately, the victors.

American leftists take a page out of their books and encourage their idiotic followers to put themselves in harm's way HOPING they will be killed or injured to make headlines.

This leaves the good guys only two choices --- give up and concede defeat OR ride out the propaganda storm until the bad guys are ultimately defeated.

His ego clouded his judgement at times in my opinion. Especially his race with edit (General Montgomery) for bragging rights.

To the credit of the British, in general (with exceptions due to circumstances of course) were more traditional in their approach and in my opinion they were more cautious with a concerted effort to not lose as many soldiers. Some of this was to maintain support at home (Canadian soldiers were often used more for fodder for the empire, none worse than at Dieppe).

Canadian sacrifices at Dieppe apparently lead to influence the U.S military approach on D Day (and apparently Patton as well when he heard about how we shifted our approach), and eventually, the Brits agreed after protesting at first. As such, the wave times were decreased in some theatres from 3 minutes to 30 seconds determining that speed to overwhelm was better than being more cautious and slow when an easy target.

Im going by memory. Our losses at Dieppe probably saved lives on D Day.

In short, I believe Patton had an ego and his grandeur, over inflated view of himself caused him to be reckless. He read all he could about Rommel and was prepared, but it wasnt his life on the line (as much as propaganda tried to present it as him being at risk in some locales).

He was also demanding they continue East into Russia after Germany surrendered. The source of many conspiracies about his untimely demise via car accident linked to his continued pressure, against the wishes of the Allies to defeat the Commies.

Bastogne HAD to be held. It was the key to victory or defeat for the Germans in the Bulge. It was “death ground” as Sun Tsu would have described it. Bastogne was a major road junction, taking it would have allowed the Germans to rapidly advance on multiple roads seizing supplies on the way. Perhaps they could have achieved their objective of splitting the allied armies in half before being isolated and destroyed.
