Where I think you are wrong on this (and I know it is going to get me in trouble with you) is that from what I read in that speech (I did not read all of it) he was speaking of the changes that were going on during the Civil Rights Movement. He said "Selma" because it played an important part in the Civil Rights Movement. From what I am getting from the speech is that he wasn't speaking of those particular events (and I think he did list some of them off) but rather the mindset of that generation of people.

The way I see it is not that it was a lie but rather that he was using examples from history that he knew about to represent the changes in mentality that allowed his parents to come together and have a child.

Maybe you see something different, but I think he was using historical references to get a point across not to lie to the people.
