In 2012, before the fence was built, nearly 10,000 illegal immigrants crossed the border into Israel, but the next year, 2013, after the main part of the fence was built, only 34 made it into Israel, and since then the numbers have been in single digits. These Africans have been robbed and brutalized and sometimes killed as they made their way toward Israel, so it is not surprising to hear Egyptian soldiers shot them, but this has been going on for years before the fence was built so it does not influence the drastic drop in illegal immigrants making it to Israel.
It would be a bigger project for the US, and I'm guessing different kinds of fencing would probably have to be used on different kinds of terrain, but it would give the US better control over immigration. If the US wants to allow more immigrants in, then change the law and allow them to walk in through legal entrances.
