Obesity is higher amongst the poor, since they tend to eat mostly processed shitty food.

Maybe when an R is the WH, the media will rise hell about this.
I believe Mrs. Obama has been making a fuss about this for several years. Fresh produce is expensive; it will never work on food stamps or a really tight budget.

Whenever Mrs O brings it up the RW'ers cry about losing freedoms like the freedom to have High Blood Pressure

Make Healthy Foods More Affordable?
Boycott unhealthy foods?
There ARE cheap healthy foods, maybe people need to be educated on that?
Bananas, eggs, etc.

Aye it is, and maybe more significantly, it's perishable. And then the shopper is presented with this green live stuff that will rot in a few days, versus this frozen processed stuff that will "keep" for weeks, and the practical thing to do seems to be the latter. Of course the effects of actually living on that processed junk aren't spelled out on that frozen food aisle --- an aisle that has grown exponentially in recent years.

And the freedom to ingest carcinogens and heart attackers... one of the most bizarre issues ever brought up on this forum was the FDA finally taking trans fat off the GRAS list. Some wags actually protested that as government intrusion. It shows how far down the hole blind ideology can take one.

As this conversation in this thread goes on as with many others.
Simple topics and solutions are made complicated.

Nothing is done.

It is already all over the news, but the government keeps making it harder to read labels.

Adults have a right to be fat.
Children, not so much.

Unlike when I was a kid, most kids are loch key kids coming home to junk food and TV/ internet..no exercise, so they are getting fat.

Do they allow that? I would think that would be child neglect.

I read labels voraciously but to me it's the food processors who make it harder taking end-around routes to disguise what they're doing. If it isn't hiding several different varieties of sugars listed separately, now it's manipulating "portion sizes" since they're undefined by law.

For a while I was judging cereals based on the "sugars" line --- not noticing that that line is now being based on a smaller and smaller portion.... where a standard portion used to be 1 cup, now it's a third of a cup or even a quarter-cup, which is absurd to claim is a portion, but drives that sugar line down. Translated to the 1-cup standard, that cereal touting "8 grams of sugar" is actually 32 grams in a cup.

It's deceit after deceit after deceit. Always a step ahead of the consumer. But god forbid we should make 'em tell the truth, oh noes that's the end of the freaking world.

I thought eggs were supposed to be bad for us?
We probably could make fresh foods more affordable if farmers would agree to sell ALL their produce, not just the perfect stuff. I'm appalled by how much good food gets thrown away. I don't think I would ever boycott unhealthy foods, but what we feed our kids when they are small really does seem to influence how they eat as adults. I always gave mine fruits for dessert and minimized sugar (he was ADHD before it was the fashion to medicate them) and he would still rather have a half a cantalope than a piece of pie or cake. He still puts yogurt on his pancakes, too, instead of syrup. Disgusting, but it's what he grew up used to.

I've heard nutritionists say that frozen vegetables (not gooked up with sauce or anything) are as good for you as fresh. Are they wrong?

Are you ever responsible for anything? It isn't difficult, if you are gaining weight you are taking in too many calories or not burning enough. If the labels are difficult to decipher you are buying complicated processed foods.

If you consider how your body got here eating choices are much easier. Our ancestors didn't eat Cheetos. For them, fast food is the one that got away.

um, I just eat what I want.

My food intake yesterday:

1 piece of white butter bread
1 English muffin
2 packs of fruit snacks
1 small bag of pretzels
1 flavored water
1 cup of coffee

They are passing laws to make it harder to know what is in food, they just passed a law that the market doesn't have to label where our meat has come from.
I agree with the portions ..or they raise the price due to a drought and it stays that price even when the drought is over.

I am going to start going to the farmers market regularly.

And your right about the wealthier getting the better non processed foods. Also working families who just eat processed foods because of working 20 hours a day to afford living..

.Processed food are the worst.

.

Today:

1 slice of butter bread
1 cup of coffee

Jesus Christ, you have 2 years left to live. Where's the nutrition?

seriously, if I could live off of Goetze caramel creams I would.
If I needed something salty, I'd go out and buy a warm hot pretzel from Aunt Annies.
