Looking at 2025 current events from a historical perspective. Say, 90 years ago:

A bold and brash intruder enters the scene, painting a picture of a once-great country that has fallen victim to "the other". He describes a current distopia so brutal and unforgiving that widespread pain and suffering are only days away. Then he announces the classic promise: "Only I can fix this", and enough of the public believes him and grants him power.

With each new individual and troubling move, the leader has two critical groups enabling him -- an intimidated and compliant government that is essentially paralyzed, and the street-level "useful idiots" (Lenin's term) who have an immediate, impulsive and aggressive excuse for the move, questioning the patriotism of anyone who doesn't comply, issuing vague threats of retribution.

Then the moves just keep piling up, and become more commonplace and normalized through sheer repetition. A large segment of the population are just living their lives and not paying particular attention to the details. One by one, corporations bend the knee and comply/capitulate. One by one, media outlets make their changes. One by one, opposing voices go quiet. What was once alarming is now just part of a daily flow.

And then, one day, it's in full effect.

God damn. Now we know what it looks like. Now we know "how they could have let this happen". I really didn't need to learn this first hand, though.

I thought the Democrat left were opponents of the corporations? Now, they are defending the corporations? This seems to be a continual occurrence by the Democrats. Like they were against same-sex marriage when Clinton was President. Now, they can't even define what a woman is. What happened with Kimmel is what he said and how he said it. He didn't leave room for the possibility that the killer of Kirk was the "alleged" shooter killer and guilty before his day in court. And, he was trying to get Democrats all riled up for more violent protests against Trump and MAGA when neither are responsible for the shooter. Robinson has been radicalized to the far left because of Kirk's stand on transgenders. And, it's not just ABC. There are other networks like NBC and CBS giving out fake and lying to the public. The FCC does not regulate other forms of media and social media. So, Kimmel's free speech rights are not being violated. But again, a big switch after the Biden administration and Obama administration were going after Fox News and trying to shut them down. Time to stop your whining and realize you are part of the problem.

I guess I've always assumed that most of them were focused, intelligent (in their way) and strong.

It's no secret why Repubs objected so vehemently to a board inside DHS assigned to ferret out disinformation being spread to the public. How many right wing media sites could survive such scrutiny is an open question.
