It's such a violent fire that most folks would look at it and say "it exploded" but the only way to really get an explosion out of it is to contain the pressure somehow.

I saw a cookoff of one of these lithium battery on YouTube. Yes, under the right circumstance, they can blow, like the old industrial left truck batteries. What I saw with the lift truck batteries could not blow up a car, but could scare the crap out of you and maybe give acid burns if it happened while on the lift truck.

Lithium burns at something like 3500 degrees if IIRC. Not gonna give you much time to escape, especially if your doors are electrically activated and your battery is not supplying power because it's on fire.

Informative. Knew it burned at very high temp. Mostly what I have seen reported where batter fires, no explosions, and some of those at home charging. I did not realize, you could simply roll up somewhere, and have your vehicle explode, before having time to exit. That's some spooky crap.

I will keep my two internal combustion (his and hers) SUVs, not at all interested in pursuing a change to EV at this time or in the foreseeable future.

It was a rental rigged with explosives. Musk said that the vehicle's systems were all functioning normally right up until the explosion according to their telemetry. I find it creepy as hell that they would know that about their vehicles, but apparently they do.
