One Battle After Another

When HBO ran it (before the awards) I was not even aware of the leftist platitudes being heaped upon it.

Other than Penn I thought the cast was worth a watch....I was mistaken.

Don't feel bad. I was so traumatized by watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine that I don't ever want to watch another movie.

Some of my favorite movies are Oscar winners 50 years older or more. Movies that stand the test of time. I don’t see any award winning movies in the last two decades that I would want to watch again let alone be cherished in 50 years
Again, I agree at least in part.

I can always watch my favorite movie, Casablanca.

But some of the more modern movies— even the ones I’ve enjoyed — aren’t likely to stand the test of time. A recent example: I kind of enjoy some of the movies performed by Emma Stone. But that recent one, “Poor Things” may have had some technical merits. But overall? Wow. I thought it sucked. (I did enjoy “La La Land,” however.

I have watched The Dark Knight several times. I completely agree that the late Heath Ledger deserves his posthumously awarded Oscar. But 50 years from now? The movie will be all but forgotten.

Oscar darling that I watched last night

Left me wondering what the critics see in it. Bizarre plot about a group of terrorists fighting against ICE like troops. Made me wonder who I should be rooting for.

Plot was basically stupid about a group of terrorists who were killing people and blowing shit up go into hiding for 16 years and are being hunted by white supremacist Army troops.

Good actors who play cartoonish roles
DeCaprio plays a stoner former terrorist
Sean Penn a psychopath Army Colonel

At close to three hours, I struggled to finish it
The last couple of choices have led me to believe that DeCaprio's TDS has affected his judgement. This and "Don't Look Up". Both TDS hate movies that are simply dumb, amateurish and the only people that watch the whole thing have green hair.

Don’t know any of these movies I’ve seen or want to watch again

Here are the last 10 Academy Award winners for Best Picture (most recent first)
  1. 2024 — Anora (97th Academy Awards Best Picture winner)
  2. 2023 — Oppenheimer
  3. 2022 — Everything Everywhere All at Once
  4. 2021 — CODA
  5. 2020 — Nomadland
  6. 2019 — Parasite
  7. 2018 — Green Book
  8. 2017 — The Shape of Water
  9. 2016 — Moonlight
  10. 2015 — Spotlight
Anora -- Never heard of it
Oppenheimer - Little slow, good movie, but best of the year? No
Everything...at once -- Not for everyone, the weirdest damn movie that makes absolutely no sense. A mystery how the critics thought this was not just movie of the year, but decade.
CODA -- Average movie. So many movies are better than it was.
Nomadland -- again, a good movie - but best?? Must have been a slow year
Parasite - very good. The first one on this list that makes sense.
Green Book - very good
The Shape of Water --- WTF did I just watch?? Obvious social messaging.
Moonlight -- haven't saw it, refuse to for the fact it won best picture based on affirmative action
Spotlight -- extremely good. Makes sense it won

I was not impressed by DeCaprios performance. I thought he mailed it in. Yet, got nominated as Best Actor

Sean Penn was quite good but I thought his character was too cartoonish and not believable

They have ruined the award, but they did it years ago. The award became political and virtue signaling moniker at least 15 years ago. And getting progressively worse. You can't trust critics anymore. I have 2-3 that I pay any attention to. Too many times I have seen a movie critics hated, and it was great. But it portrayed the military in a positive light, or had religious-positive plot etc.

I love to watch old movies and revisit ones I haven’t seen in years.
I have only seen three of these movies and can’t see myself watching a decade from now. Greenbook is on frequently and I will watch parts of it. Good movie but not great.

I absolutely HATED Everything at once. Because critics loved it, I made several attempts to watch it. But could not make it through……Just plain stupid

I wanted to like Oppenheimer but was only interested in the bomb making part. Too much of the Oppy the Commie stuff

Unfortunately for both of us - we aren't the demographic they want to reach. Take sit coms, the only sit com I have liked in recent years is "Check your Enthusiasm" - but that is due to Larry David absolutely targets older audiences.
We watch older movies again now more than new ones. Hollywood produced movies are damn near a thing of the past. They are releasing record low number of films, and they suck. Bad. Almost exclusively the only good movies out there are by independent labels.

The best work I see today are not 2 hr movies but series on cable or streaming services

Sopranos
Breaking Bad/Saul
Game of Thrones
WIred

All had great writing, good production values, great acting

Very true -- you should try Apple+ for a month.
Servant - right up there with your list.
Severance - weird, but not in a weird way. LOL Outstanding series. Again - right up there.
Shrinking - sitcom, pretty good, watchable for sure

But Servant and Severance are 100% worth the $15 or whatever it is for a month,
