August 13, 1945. We attempt contact with Japan to see if they are willing to discuss surrender. A lot was happening in Japan at this time. Even after two nuclear bombs being used, the Japanese military was attempting a coup to keep the Emperor from surrendering.

Yup.

I remember I did a paper on it when in college.

I read that the Japanese officials and diplomats were saying it was just a big bomb, no different than the Tokyo fire bombings that destroyed Tokyo. They were insane. They wanted to keep fighting and were in total denial of reality.

Sound familiar?

"Unconditional surrender". Truman would not discuss terms so the Japanese went to Stalin for a better deal. Apparently the hangup was the Japanese Emperor. They didn't want him executed. Ironically the Emperor wasn't imprisoned or executed anyway after we dropped two Atomic weapons on civilians.
