On the Border, Republicans Set a Trap, Then Fell Into It

Congressional Republicans thought they had set a clever trap for Democrats that would accomplish complementary political and policy goals.

Their idea was to tie approval of military assistance to Ukraine to tough border security demands that Democrats would never accept, allowing Republicans to block the money for Kyiv that many of them oppose while simultaneously enabling them to pound Democrats for refusing to halt a surge of migrants at the border. It was to be a win-win headed into November’s elections.

But Democrats tripped them up by offering substantial — almost unheard-of — concessions on immigration policy without insisting on much in return. Now it is Republicans who are rapidly abandoning a compromise that gave them much of what they wanted, leaving aid to Ukraine in deep jeopardy, border policy in turmoil and Congress again flailing as multiple crises at home and abroad go without attention because of a legislative stalemate.

The turn of events led to a remarkable Capitol Hill spectacle this week as a parade of Senate Republicans almost instantly repudiated a major piece of legislation they had spent months demanding as part of any agreement to provide more help to a beleaguered Ukraine.

“A year ago they said, ‘We need a change in the law,’” said Mr. Lankford, frustrated by his Republican colleagues who had been up in arms about the border situation only to suddenly reject the new legislation. “Now the conversation is, ‘Just kidding, we don’t need a change in the law. We just need the president to use the laws they already have.’ That wasn’t where we were before.”

Looks like Biden and the Dems are playing 3-D chess while the poor Republicans are still trying to figure out the game. Is there anything the Repubs can get done? Heck, even their attempts to impeach the president or Mayorkas have gone aground.

Secure Fence act of 2006.

Biden, Schumer, and Hillary all voted for it.

Enforce the laws on the books.

There is no trap. No more legislation is needed.

Is WHITHOUSE.GOV considered a reliable source by the cult?

Billions in more debt to waste in useless wars is asking a lot in return.

MAGA congressional members are the Keystone Cops of the political world. That is why they should be nowhere near the wheels of power. Unfortunately, that is not the case. They will just continue to screw things up.

Poopeypants is the reason the border is open and Poopeypants alone Looneytunes. Real Americans know this and will remind you lemmings in November.

What you call MAGAS exist because Republicans make promises and do the old sidestep when the time comes to put up or shut up. It is insulting that you define who anyone is or is not and this when in a world of freaks, Progs are the dominant ones.

I never see any of the Biden honks explaining specifically why the Secure Fence Act of 2006 is not being enforced by the Biden admin and the Mayorkas DHS.

You mean thwart you left-wing lunatics.

Yeah, Hope so.

Republicans are NOT the ones who run to the Supreme Court to stop a state from protecting it's citizens.

Republicans are NOT the ones who run for president announcing to the third-world, that there should be an immediate "surge to the border" if they become president.

Republicans are NOT the ones who create sanctuary cities that attract illegal immigrants.

Republicans are NOT the ones who pass legislation (like California) to give free healthcare to illegal immigrants.

Republicans are NOT the ones who challenge ANY attempts to secure our borders.

I don't think so. Americans aren't big proponents of sending billions of dollars to Ukraine and Israel to keep funding their wars either. Additionally, it makes no sense to me to continue to allow migrants to cross the border when we have millions here we can't even process due to backlog. The border needs to be 100% closed to migrants until we get caught up and have a realistic way of dealing with this.

Since the beginning of this admin. every member of it has declared that the border is secure, closed, and under control.
This being an election year and Biden's poll numbers on the border being worst of all of his bad polling numbers, suddenly the Border is a disaster, and it is Republicans fault.

Democrats - bleeck.

The WEF wants to allow a group of unvetted, Illegals the size of Patton's Third Army to cross into America on a monthly basis....and all democrats and a few Republicans are OK with that.

Only long prison sentences in Leavenworth or military tribunals can prevent a Civil War

No doubt republicans in the Senate miscalculated how informed the republican base has become. The previously reliable uniparty play blew up in their face. They tried to present a border security bill that resold the existing laws as a big accomplishment, with a long list of democrat giveaways.
