When I did my studies the Cultural Revolution was still going on.

It was Deng Xiaoping (But in Wade Giles format). He survived the massacres and of course eventually his Clique won out. The Peking Review began mentioning him positively; it's how I thought he was the emerging power.

I was a first year student at the time but I was used to the USSR media methods.
