Trump took in the Chinese students because he was desperate to make a deal with Xi. The Chinese accepted his tariffs and Trump accepted their students. It was a quid pro quo. Xi rolled Trump. Xi was happy to make Americans pay tariffs on Chinese goods if he got his citizens access to American technology and higher education.

It isn’t a “deal” just yet. And it is one thing to allow genuine students, like med students for instance, to come here. It would be far more questionable to allow so many supposed engineering “students” such visas.

The “devil is in the details” which we don’t yet know. But I’d agree that this seems like a dubious course. Our libs and progressives and Democratics are likely to love it. And that, too, will be a significant tell that it is highly suspect.

After Sars and Covid I'd say their medical programs in China are doing just fine, for all the wrong reasons.

I disagree that it is "stupid" as every Chinese student is aware that anything useful to China gets sent home but it is also a matter of ACCESS to National Defense and Economically sensitive material. It's only in the higher degrees that they get access to that stuff and so it's a much smaller number that need to be barred and monitored BUT actual spies would need rooting out of course.
