And again......that does nothing since current background checks are avoided by using a straw buyer, someone who can pass the background check....so universal background checks between two private parties will be avoided the same way........all it will do is make it harder for me to lend a gun to a friend, have a friend watch my guns if I go on vacation ....and make us both felons for simply not paying to have a pointless background check done....two law abiding people made into felons over paperwork.......

The best method.....when you find a criminal with a gun, put them in jail.....that works 100% of the time...and requires no new burden on normal, law abiding people...

Right now straw buyers face 10 years in prison...and it doesn't stop them..why? because prosecutors don't go for 10 years...and rarely prosecute the baby momma or grandmother of the gang banger who buys the gun...often under coercion by the gang member.....

Those are all good points but that wouldnt stop more than a trickle of the illegal straw gun buyers in the US. My bet is that there are 2 times as many illegal guns as registered guns in the US. You have a good point regarding the ammo. It would only effect legal gun owners and slightly effect illegal gun owners.

Those guns were purchased legally. I have suggested ways to get illegal guns off the streets, but no one is buying that, either. Everybody wants their killing machine.

Guns taken illegally are still illegal guns even if the last purchase of them was legal.

And the way to get illegal guns off the street is obvious; Stop and Frisk.

Why can't the cops just be limited to arrests for illegal weapons, if that is what stop and frisk is for? I have no objection to it, if it isn't misused. I have heard it is sucessfully used in a number of cities. New York just wasn't applying it correctly and instead of fixing it, pols managed to ditch it altogether.
