We are lucky that the guy had very little training on how to use a knife in combat.

There are major arteries close to the surface that are very difficult to stop the bleeding from if not impossible.

For instance, if I grab a man's left hand using my left hand, I could make a deep long cut down the mans forearm that would be practically impossible to stop the bleeding from without a tourniquet. I can almost guarantee you the dude would be dead before the average person could find the materials and apply such a thing unless prepared to do so.
