The one bright point for the west is it caused schisms in the western Communist parties. Same thing happened in 1968 after the Prague Spring was suppressed.

The Communist would train and arm revolutionaries, sending them back to their home countries fully prepared to overthrow the non-Communist government. But our State Department wouldn't do the same behind the Iron Curtain.

Don't take the purposely misleading explanations (such as from the John Birch Society) that were planted to hide the true motive—dragging out the Cold War in order to provide decades more funding for the military-industrial complex.
