However, at that time there was a large Conservative wing to the Democrats. The Democrats were a tiny bit to the left of center but not enough to get Conservatives bent out of shape. The Democrats still were relatively fiscally conservative and supported the right to keep and bear and things like that. They were also pretty much anti Communists.

That all started to change in the mid 60s. By the time that dimwit Jimmy Carter won the Democrats had moved substantially further Left. It had to do with chickens coming home to roost after LBJ put all the Blacks and minorities on welfare, making them the core Democrat voting block.

It just got worse from there. Nowadays they are the Democratic Socialist Party in everything except name.
