The White House said Friday that President Barack Obama thinks the Confederate flag that currently flies outside the South Carolina statehouse belongs in a museum, according to Reuters.

Debate over the flag was reignited after nine people were shot and killed in a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday.

The flag, which flies next to the statehouse at the Confederate Soldier's Monument, is not only protected by law, but also protected by a padlock that keeps it in place. The flag is not on a pulley system, so it can't be lowered to half-staff.

The monument at which the confederate battle flag flys outside the SC state house is essentially an outside museum display. It serves the same purpose. Several years ago there was a debate in SC about the confederate battle flag flying over the state house (under the U.S. And SC flags). A compromise was reached (agreed upon by black congressional leaders in SC) that the flag would be removed from over the state house and moved to a monument on the state house grounds. Although black state representatives and local black organization approved of the compromise, the national NAACP started a boycott of SC almost immediately after the compromise was implemented. The so called boycot has been ineffective.
