O Mestre: João Gilberto 1931--2019

Today's eargasm: Morena Boca de Ouro

In a world overridden with posers who use music as a vehicle to stroke their own ego, this is the opposite, treating the music as the servant thereof. And this is a nice recording with very good video shots. Live in Rome.

CrusaderFrank this would be roughly the period when I saw his show

As we finish our daily dose of week-long mourning, this last one goes out to the official USMB ornithologist Becki ( beautress ) --- O Pato (the duck)

Remembering of course that Portuguese is too smooth for a duck to "quack" in, so it goes "quem quem"....

Rest in Peace O Mestre João e muito obrigado, o mundo te agradece para sua sensibilidade.

Timeless -- but we'll give it some anyway. One of João's prettiest renditions, "Doralice"

This version with Stan Getz and Tom Jobim on minimalist piano is from 1964 though it was already in Gilberto's repertoire from 1960. How cool is this sound considering what was contemporary in 1960. Same arrangement, add the reeds and a nice bass.

For a comparison here's the original he was tributing, by Dorival Caymmi (1914-2008), this recording from 1945:

Para Machchar Meu Coracao (Getz's ride is @ 2:06)
