NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani will skip annual parade celebrating Israel

Last I checked, NYC is a city in the United States and the people he represents are Americans.
Trump tries to be the President of all the people. There is a saying with Mayors that say they are mayors of all the people. Even if it is mocked through politics. Mamdani obviously is not of Jewish people.

The way Nutandyahoo is acting, I wouldn't support them either.
Like Trump's military birthday parade, fuk him.

Of course they did. It’s where they assume that all American Jews support Israel because they’re Jewish.
the parade is to celebrate Israel's existence, not take a stand on its policies. If you have ever marched in the parade, you would know that

I’ve never marched in a parade celebrating the existence of another country.

Seems like a weird thing to do.

Conservatives believe all Jewish Americans prioritize Israeli issues, which is an antisemitic trope called dual loyalties.

Then you are missing out. I just hate parades because I can never find a bathroom and I hate riding on a school bus.

Jews celebrate the creation of Israel in 1948. We celebrate the creation of the United States in 1776. Mamdani is supposed to be the Mayor of ALL of New York. He isn't. He's a muslim and will only celebrate Eid.
As an elected official serving in an American office ... Mamdani should celebrate America; her history; her Constitution; and what used to be her values. I don't give a hoot if he celebrates Israel or not but when he starts "dissing" America ... we have a major problem on our hands.

so should Mamdani have walked in the St. Patrick's day parade? Is that about the Constitution or American values? Or is it celebrating the culture and heritage of a group of immigrants who maintain a strong connection to their homeland?

Mamdani can celebrate whatever he wants as long as he doesn't disregard America and her history and values. If Catholic Irish want celebrate their history -- go for it. If Jews want to celebrate Marxism or Zionism -- do your thing. If Mexicans want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo -- have at it. As long as none of those things override or negate America and her Constitution and history.

but that wasn't the question here -- it was whether an elected, public official, by going to one event and not another (when there is an established practice of attending) is doing a disservice to the populace and his office.

But a mayor's job is to represent all of the residents of the city, including the Jewish people.

He's not president of America. He's mayor of a city.

Its very odd that you think he’s not representing Jewish Americans unless he’s celebrating Israel.

That’s an old antisemitic trope, assuming that all Jews are actually loyal to Israel.

He is choosing not to celebrate the heritage, history and identity of a sizable chunk of the populace. How is that related to anyone else's expected "loyalty"? He simply isn't celebrating Israel, an ally of this country, and the source of important elements of New York's culture and history. Would marching in the St. Patrick's parade indicate "loyalty" to Ireland or a statement of connection with those who are from Ireland or in some way want to celebrate all things Irish?

This is Mamdami celebrating Jewish heritage and history.

Israel is a nation state, a political entity.

and this isn't a "Jewish day parade". Puerto Rico is a political entity. Will he march in that parade?

What should Netanyahu done in response to October 7th? What would America have done if , say, Canada would have attacked America in that way?
