As he filed out from his seat towards the door never to be seen again (he was either arrested and jailed or outright killed), you could see on many of the faces they knew what was happening, this guy's time was up and his ticket was being punched, and they were putting on their best faces to act as though nothing was going on.

As the general filed out, you could see him desperately make several attempts to talk to or appeal to friends but no one would even speak, listen or look at him. The heads like Xi didn't even bat an eyelash as the guy went by. The guy was history and that was that. In China, when your time is up, your duty to your country is over, there are no appeals. You are out of there like yesterday's trash.
