No More Tariffs? Rand Paul allegedly has the votes to stop them.

If this is to be believed, Rand Paul may single-handedly end Trump's use of tariffs and force him to use alternative methods to get what he wants on trade. However, this was a power delegated to the president by Congress. This is a risky gamble, and could fracture the Republican Party going forward.

I’ve got news for you. Not all tariffs are passed on to consumers and not all goods are affected. Essentials aside, importers and overseas manufacturers will eat some of these if buying slows down. That is how business works, otherwise, why don’t they just double their prices just to make more profit? Business isn’t like government. Government can raise their “prices” at will and the “consumer” is forced to eat the increase. That is not the way business works at all. You guys fail real-world Econ. 101 BIGLY.

GDP Shrank in Q1. The Second Trump Recession has already started.

This attitude is why China expects to win. Credit MSS, they have done a hell of a job in the West. Perhaps unmatched in espionage history.

Fyi, duties are an indirect tax....

Is duty the same as tax?

A tax is a charge imposed on a taxpayer by a government. Tariffs are a direct tax applied to goods imported from a different country. Duties are indirect taxes that are imposed on the consumer of imported goods.

Tariffs are the perview of the president. If Rand Paul is this stupid, if he thinks its 1950, than he has damned his and his fathers legacy for this charade. America is at war, its that simple.

Too bad you didn't read the law that allowed the President to assume those duties as voted by Congress.

The Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act of 1934 marked a pivotal shift, empowering the executive branch to negotiate trade arrangements with other nations. This was not an abandonment of congressional authority but a pragmatic adaptation to enable quick responses to rapid changes in international trade markets.

My what a short memory we have. 2022 ring any bells?
Those GDP figures were thrown off by private inventory changes like this was thrown off by imports. Neither is indicative of a recession.

"a 6 percent duty on imports"

But, it's cool. It's not like we expect rubes to, you know, know stuff.

/—-/ No tariffs on American made. Twist the words all you want.

/—-/ As long as you never buy anything.

You realize that if people stop buying things, it will collapse the economy, right?

That means retailers will have to downsize their personnel if sales decline. That increases the number of the unemployed. Retailers are already under pressure

Here's a poem I remember from Mad Magazine in the 1970's... Probably even more true now.

Oh, give thanks ye small businessmen, who've managed to survive.
Be glad in this economy that you are still alive.
The price of goods keeps going up, inflation's running on.
So, give thanks you can buy cheap from Taiwan, good old Taiwan
