Putin won't agree to a lasting peace. He proved that as you mentioned in 2014 and later in 2022. This is the Hitler formula all over again. The media already has plans to blame Trump. Trump best stop saying he is a winner. I recall the blame after Nixon did the same trick in Vietnam.
It’s not our war to win or lose. The price we and Western Europe has paid to emasculate Russia is a cheap one. All we are out is money and obsolescent military equipment and ordnance. In return Russia has been bled nearly dry of manpower and economic resources AND we have seen new military technologies tried out with someone else paying the price in blood. Ukraine is the Spanish Civil War all over again with the west gaining the benefits like Germany did in the SCW.
You are not aware, nor do you need to be as a soldier, of all of the treaties that the US has. I damn sure never pledged allegiance to Nguyễn Văn Thiệu but there we were. I took an oath to follow the orders of those appointed above me and I fulfilled that oath.
The US was the Putin of the Vietnam war. It was nothing more than the US flexing muscle that the country had no appetite for nor was there any upside to it. I fear that Putin will probably put us into a WW, but the blame lies squarely on Obama/Biden for their inaction at the proper time.

Blood or money. We put so much into working to defeat Putin when Trump says we quit, I see Trump as just a quitter, and not a winner. Trump will rue the day he hands Putin this trophy.
Ukraine occupied Ukraine for many years. Putin up and invaded Crimea and Obama said thanks and keep it. Now you want Trump to tell Putin thanks my pal, keep Ukraine that you conquered. Me and you are too old to serve again. So for me it a time to be honest as I saw this crap happen in South Korea and Vietnam and even in Kosovo when Clinton bombed the hell out of those living there.
You were never a servant of other countries. American service people are seldom put under foreign command. NATO is a treaty that says if one member nation is attacked, it is an attack on all and all member nations are duty bound to defend the one attacked. That is technically serving the interests of the US.
There is a sole surviving son rule that relieved some GIs from the obligation to go (think Pvt. Ryan movie) and I believe there is a rule that two members of the same family cannot be there at the same time, but I don't think the service of the father relieves the son. It didn't in my case as my dad was in Nam about a year or so before I was sent.

My uncle is who you speak of. His son and my story of his son. I got this from family. The story I was told he he wanted his son to stay out of Vietnam and as high a rank as he was to pull his weight with the Air Force and it failed. I last saw him alive in the 1980s and he is dead. My uncle was to me kind of grumpy. But he was then retired and pretty old. And at the time we had come to the home of a relative due to my cousin being about to die and her wanting to see family the last time. She died 2 weeks later. She is actually buried about 2 miles from where I now live in Idaho. I saw her at Travis Air Force base in CA at that time.
Because my uncle was a lifer in the Air Force, I saw more of him in WW2 than at later times of his life. Mom may have talked to him but i did not see him for many years. Here is his brief story. He and his Brother both enlisted in the Army. Both served in WW2 and in Korea where the younger brother was killed by the North Koreans. He was a early casualty of that war. Since his brother died, he was sent many places after he changed from the Army to the Air Force.
The Russians do not have that kind of force. It will be nuclear if they try anything like that and we all knows what that means. Zelensky is the dictator here.
I have no sympathy or respect for Putin and his malicious aggression. But at this time Putin gives every indication of being willing to deal and end the war, the destruction, the thousands of bodies piling up.
I have never heard Putin ever claim he is ready for peace. He plans to rip off Ukraine and that is based on his own actions. Why we gang up on Zelensky is a major puzzle to me.
