The Puritans initially fled England because it was immoral. The Mayflower expedition was launched from a Puritan exile community in Holland, where they were still unhappy because everyone wasn't being the sticks in the mud they were.

The Puritan movement died out in England after Oliver Cromwell made a right mess of things, but it the US it went on all the way up until the Salem Witch trials.
