She is dramatically overrated. It is an interesting phenomena when it happens.
Why large masses of people will like anything a performer does without any ability to critique.
In the 1960s, Paul McCartney could have recorded a series of farts and their die hard fans would have loved it. Taylor Swift is the same.
I have loved music all my life, almost any genre.
I rate Taylor Swift as such:
Scale of 1 - 10
As a Performer - 10
As a lyricist - 7
As a song writer - 3 (Why so low? Well the songs are not all that good, very replicated and although she is credited as lead songwriter in every song - she virtually never writes the music without working with song writers.
As a singer - 5 (Let's face it, she is not that great of a singer. Constant use of background singers, uses auto-tuner when recording, Swifties will defend her in this - but they would defend her eating poop.
Overall - 7, her brand performance and stage presence is really what makes this number as high as it is.
Without the performer talent and looks - 5
There are a long line of female artists ahead of her in talent. But Taylor has the fan base regardless,

If you read it - then you would see that her performative talent is a 10, and is the only reason why the number is that high. And then you would see that I rate her a 5 without that skewing the average.
And that is a quite massive over rating.

Actually you can barely hear it. Clearly auto-tuned and heavy use of background singers.
Anyone can sound good with that much voice help.
"Artist" like her are just like Swift - chosen for their looks.
This is a video of her without auto-tune and background singers.
She has a fairly common good singing voice with heavy use of inflection, probably because she doesn't have the range to carry notes that are not high.
It is not that unique or remarkable.
Not trying to be an asshole and shit on something you like. I just have a particular dislike for all the corporate sponsored pop stars chosen so clearly for their beauty and looks.
And it is completely fine for you to feel that way. A preference is not up for moral judgement and cannot be right or wrong in of itself.
I personally believe she is a very good songwriter and singer and like her music a lot.

Only question I would have is how you would think SHE is a good songwriter?
Her lyrics are better than most pop singers, that is inarguable.
But the music is run-of-the-mill pop songs. Not unique to her. And the reason they are not unique to her is that she doesn't write them by herself. She uses a range of real songwriters to help her.

And the thread is not whether she has talent, but that she is over rated. Which is a given.
She is very good at telling stories and integrating them to the tone of the music and although often personal, tbe genuity of them makes them relatable. She is good at expressing emotion through her lyrics.
She is a real songwriter and using a team does not illegitimize that title. Sure, it is pop and that is the metric you use to judge it. It is not literature. Eminem is not a shakespearean author, but as a rap lyricist he is brilliant, yes?
It is not at all "given". That is just your opinion.

I love lyrics, wrote probably over 100 songs as a teenager. I also use to listen to songs on head phones and play lines over and over and write down the lyrics. (Obviously before the internet)
And yes, Swift is a superior lyricist. And you can tell there is realness to them in how she performs it, or she is a very good actress.
And you are correct that I dislike pop music, and that weighs in as a bias. Or does it? The reason I dislike it is they are sooo simple/repetitive beat lines with equally simple electronic instrumentation to go with the beat. Sorry, but anyone with a computer can create a pop song. Anyone. It takes very little talent.
And she is a very good performer. She is beautiful with a hellacious body. And in the pop world - looks is 70% of the reason the labels pushed you into the limelight. Another thing I don't like about pop.

Hmm - well Cassandra and I Hate it Here are extremely similar musically. If I hear one, and then a half hour later heard the other I would totally think they played the same song twice.
And her singing in both is marginal, sorry that is my honest opinion. If Lady Gaga or Aguilera or Beyonce' and on and on - was singing it, they would be way better.
She is an average singer.
She is hot, a talented lyricist, solid performer and has built her brand masterfully - powerhouse in the marketing of herself.
But she is an average singer. And an average, if not below average music side of song writer which is why she always-always uses other song writers to write the music.
She is a good singer, she knows how to use her voice.

She is a very good singer, but not great. But that's not her genius. It's songwriting. Her music is easy to listen to because her songs are well-crafted, clever and/or infectious. OTOH, while Adele is a cracker jack singer, you focus almost primarily on her voice, not her songs. Neither is correct or wrong; they're just different talents.
