In public mass shootings in the U.S., victims shot with a handgun were more likely to die than in the events associated with a rifle, according to a new study in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

The research team found that events with a handgun were associated with a higher percentage of people killed, whereas events involving a rifle were associated with more people shot. About 26 percent of those shot with a handgun had more than one fatal wound, versus two percent of people shot with a rifle. Handguns were also more likely to be associated with brain and heart injuries.

"All of us were shocked. We came to the table with our bias that an assault weapon would be worse," Sarani said. "This should inform the medical community about what to expect at trauma centers and lawmakers about reasonable gun laws."

We went from 200 million guns in private hands in the 1990s and 4.7 million people carrying guns for self defense in 1997...to close to 400-600 million guns in private hands and over 17.25 million people carrying guns for self defense in 2018...guess what happened...

The difference is actually easy to understand. When the Las Vegas shooter was spraying bullets at a crowd, he was firing at what the military call an Area Target. In other words, just firing as fast as he could into the crowd. A hit, any hit is what he was going for.

But pistols tend to be used much closer, and more time is spent aiming, and you end up with more vital organs hit. It is unlikely that you would die from being shot in the forearm, or the calf. You would be hurt certainly, but probably not die. The Las Vegas shooter had a killing rate of about 10%, which is about average for such things. The round the AR uses is preferred for a number of reasons, but especially because it creates a “militarily significant wound” that is to say that the individual shot is now wounded, and requires care. That means someone has to carry him off the field of battle, taking three or four people out of the fight, instead of just one.

One of the horrors the troops had to endure in the First World War was the sound of screaming men, wounded and crying out for help, for their Mothers, for anyone to please just help them. It wears on the nerves, and causes fear in the troops who endure it.

Now, if the bullet from the AR strikes the chest or head, then chances are you have a mortal wound. However, that is the same story for a pistol round, which is why people are taught to shoot center mass, because it increases the odds for a vital organ to be hit.

Spray and Pray technique does not have a high rate of vital hits, because the part you are shooting at is relatively small. The FBI used a picture of a Milk Bottle target for a long time, to show you how small the vital organs you were aiming at really were.

Now hits outside of the Bottle might kill you, but probably won’t. They’ll hurt, and cause some damage, but probably not death, providing you get medical treatment in a timely manner.

Using the Bump Stock further reduced the accuracy of the rifle in Las Vegas, it is hard to hit things with a fully automatic rifle, one that you want jumping in your hands is nearly impossible. To do so your target would have to be large, really large. Well his was. It was a large crowd, and he was firing into it randomly. He would have had a much higher kill ratio with a M1A rifle firing the 308 Winchester round using a scope. Every round would have been aimed, and chances are he would have topped three kills for four shots.

The rapid fire was intended to create a panic, and cause further injuries by a stampeding crowd.

Being hit by a pistol bullet inside the milk bottle, is much much worse than being hit by a rifle round outside of it. Statistics show that to be the case, and if you don’t like statistics, you can use common sense. We throw our hands up to defend ourselves when someone is punching us.
