Yes. They were rich. And having twenty million in personal assets is rich, too! But there is a difference between wealth and excessive wealth. The Founders had no way of anticipating the kind of wealth it would be possible to accumulate in the intricate society they were laying the groundwork for.

Again, if they could have seen the future you are assured they would have provided a measure of control to avoid the kind of raw power excess wealth would afford. I'm taking my family to Italy in a few weeks. We are going to the Vatican. I was there 20+ years ago, and I have not seen a more spectacular building since. Everything is an amazing piece of art.

I've been there too and it IS Amazing, awe inspiring....we've really lost this true sense of masterful art....

the catholic church in the USA is broke or going broke, I read recently....even catholic charities are going broke....60% of their money now comes from the government, State, and Federal money from Bush's faith based initiative program....

most of the Vatican's wealth like in its architectural aspects can not be sold....and much of their wealth in gold and relics were donated and given to them, and willed to them, over a 2000 year period

The wisdom in it for today is that government assistance in America should require public works whenever the recipient is able enough to do chores for the community: policing the city park, shelving books at the library, washing police cars. Lots of things could be done to save the community immense sums.

Grandpa, I am not talking about minimum wage, I'm talking about a man making $20 an hour, (not $7.75), with a family of 3 is not making enough to fully support them in some areas of the States, (especially once all the State and Federal and Local Property taxes are paid)....the cost of living has gone up sooooooo much the past few decades and wages have not kept up....not in the private sector...Of course in the public sector, they have cost of living raises AND merit raises, so they are keeping up better than the rest...
