It’s the difference between self governance and centralized authority. A community that chooses to celebrate a specific religious tradition is not the same as a community that is required to celebrate something they wish not to just because someone wants to impose it upon them.

Not long ago there was a town in Canada (I believe) who didn’t want to host a gay pride celebration (displaying the flag or something). They were sued by the activists and were fined.

To me, it just seems arbitrary and authoritarian to require a community to celebrate every fringe religion some activists wishes to impose upon them. It also seems intolerant for someone to impose their beliefs on the celebration of someone else’s. If satanist was equal representation, then why not celebrate one of their own holidays rather than interfering with someone else’s? Obviously, they really just want to disrupt someone else’s religious expression, which should be protected.

I have a great idea.

Have you guys thought about celebrating your religion on your own? It seems that you have plenty of places to do that. It doesn’t have to be on government property.
