Why would I want to trade the brand new battery in my brand new car for a battery that's been charged several hundred times?

Because you would own the car and not the battery. The car is new when you buy it, it'll come with a charged battery that would get exchanged at a charge station when needed. So whether the driver believes the initial battery is new or old, it's irrelevant.

It's like owning a Makita drill, you swap the discharged battery with a charged one, then pop the old one on charge.

Work on a site with Makita batteries on charge. Use one, not mine, and when it flattens, swap it for another and put the old one on charge. Might be pigs to you, but I suppose simple concepts flummox you.
