The contents of a secret report by Israel’s Mossad spy agency on Iran’s nuclear programme leaked to the media this week are shocking and predictable in equal measure.

Shocking because the report reveals that the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has spent years trying to convince the international community and Israelis that Tehran is racing towards building a nuclear bomb, when evidence presented by his own spies suggests the opposite.

Predictable because since early 2011 Israel’s security establishment has been screaming as loudly as any secret service realistically could that Netanyahu was not to be trusted on the Iran issue.

The significance of the leak is not just historical, given that Netanyahu is still trying to scaremonger about an Iranian threat and undermine negotiations between western powers and Tehran.

According to the report, leaked to al-Jazeera and the Guardian newspaper, Mossad concluded in 2012 that Tehran was “not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons”.

At the time, Netanyahu was widely reported to be pushing for a military strike against Iran. He had recently flourished a cartoon bomb at the UN in New York, claiming Tehran was only a year away from developing a nuclear weapon. The international community had to act immediately, he said.

Are other possible participants in any such future strike (the US, elements of NATO, the Saudis, et al) making material reliance upon Bibi's assurances, rather than utilizing their own spies and agents and intelligence apparatus?

If 'yes', then, it's a problem worth discussing...

Keep in mind that the Muslim Theocracy in Iran has repeatedly called for the eradication of Israel and at-present actively supports regional militias (Hezbollah, etc.) which actively engage in combat operations against Israel... an enemy-by-proxy... fighting a war-by-proxy... against Israel.

Most of us, charged with the safekeeping of a small and besieged nation, and faced with such open and repeated threats to wipe us off the map, would ALSO probably go to extensive lengths, to paint our declared Mortal Enemy in the worst possible light, in order to shore-up our own alliances and support.

Do you not believe that Western Intelligence Services understand this in advance, when vetting any data coming out of Bibi and his boys and girls?

My guess is, all of those Western Intelligence Services do exactly that - they already take it with a grain of salt, or... several grains of salt.

It's appropriate and correct to put such things on the scope of the public, for dissection and discussion, but I'm not overly concerned that our own Intelligence folks have been taken-in by an over-reliance upon Bibi's assertions.

I've seen this is several places as well. He has been saying this since 92, he looks rather foolish to keep saying it, esp when the IAEA is monitoring Iran, and he does not allow them in Israel. Love your avatar, Daniyel. It's wonderful! Netanyahu has been firm in stating that he will do whatever it takes to protect Israel. So if the Iranians want to be foolish - then he has every right to use the Samson option and put an end to it. I believe it is inevitable because Obadiah prophesies of such a day.
