Chinese is nice language, and while studying its hieroglyphs is time-demanding, reading them is simplier even in other languages. So, may be, written Chinese is even more fit to become the international "lingua franca".
But phonetically Chinese (especially its numerous dialects) is a challenge for foreigners. That's why personally I hope, English will keep its position as an international language of science and culture (like it was with Latin) even after fall of America.
