What the military wanted to do was perfectly legal as they were ONLY going to wipe out the Palestinians if they didn't have a ceasefire agreement and cough up the hostages. The military has all authority to protect people,... Especially our own country if any part of the US government ever rose against us (thankfully I don't see that happening anymore) and that's the part that you keep failing to recognize.
