No, you didn't hand it over to CHina, they took it back early in violation of the Sino-British Joint Agreement they signed in 1984 which allowed autonomy of HK for 50 years. As with many agreements, China will just ignore them, laughing in the face of the nations who foolishly believed them while ensuring they controlled the media narrative in their favor.
