One of the many odd things about myself is that I don't listen to music.

Says the guy with a Jimi Hendrix avatar???
LOL, long story about the avatar, basically, I wanted to take all pictures of myself off the internet...the Hendrix avatar was on my computer for some reason, so I used it. I can't even name one of his songs...all I know is that his version of the National Anthem was cool.

What is the ONE song you would recommend?

Just one...

Well, since I suspect others will through out various pop/rock songs, I'm gonna go with what I know best, which is jazz. Of course, I wouldn't recommend that same thing to a die hard fan that I would to a newbie, so here's a song that is accessible, beautiful and just about everyone would agree, a masterpiece..

Miles Davis "So What" of the seminal album 'Kind of Blue'

I can say that if I had a favorite song, it would be What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.[/QUOTE]

Good choice. Did you know that Louis Armstrong's mother was a drug addict who abandoned him? A Jewish family adopted him, encouraged his musical talents, nurtured him with alot of love and affection ( which Jewish families are notorious for - they love you to bits - lol... ) and that is what made Louis Armstrong the man he became. God bless the Jews. Here's one for Louie.

If I am to recommend a single song keeping in mind the audience (don't listen ordinarily), I choose something that is achingly beautiful, with harmonies that can literally bring tears to the eyes of a sensitive person. It is a song that tells not a story, but a feeling of longing that eats at the listener's very soul.

This to me is the most perfect song I ever heard.

I don't know if this is my favorite song or not as I generally listen to classic rock & roll from the 60s, 70s, and some 80s. However, whenever I listen to this song I'm moved to tears (no I'm not a wimp) because of the power and majesty of the woman's voice. And because she's pretty.

Don't know if this is your style or not. Most folks will reject it due to it's religious message but I'm more moved by the sweetness of Celine Dion's voice that anything else:
Then you should appreciate this:

(PS: I like Celine Dion, too.)

I think the OP asked for ONE suggestion by any participant so the thread wouldn't get flooded with videos. :eusa_angel:

LOL, its all good. Can't keep up, but I'm enjoying the different tastes. Some I like, some not quite. I keep flash off on the site, so the videos don't bother me!

P.S. Sadly this song can not be purchased yet. I'm praying that changes soon.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I am listening to them now!

Keep them coming!

Suggest more, please! That was wonderful.

One of the many odd things about myself is that I don't listen to music. I have never bought a tape, record or CD. I have never been to a concert, I hate dance clubs, and if I am out with friends at a bar that has a band...I will find a corner furthest away from the music or retreat outside with the smokers.

I don't hate music, it just doesn't really do anything for me except give me the occasional headache. On the flip end, I appreciate music and musicians...I just don't want to hear it unless I am in a rare mood. And the most ironic thing...I worked in radio for 5 years.

With that in mind, how about some music suggestions. I'm trying to widen my horizons and figure out why people enjoy music so much.

What is the ONE song you would recommend? I am going to download all suggestions and give music a chance. (Please no rap or heavy metal!)

In 1963, the wonderful jazz saxophonist Stan Getz teamed up with bossa nova guitarist Joao Gilberto and his singer wife Astrud to record the Latin jazz album Getz/Gilberto. The record is considered the quintessential bossa nova recording and Astrud's phrasing is studied to this day as a paradigm shifting approach to jazz singing.

The song "The Girl From Ipanema" features wonderful big, fat chords, that groovy bossa nova beat and Getz's full, lush horn. A classic...

Another must have jazz recording is Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"...so named because of the unusual choice of it being in 5/4, rather than the standard 4/4 time signature. If a waltz is 123, 123, 123...this tune is 12345, 12345, etc.

From the 1959 record 'Time Out', featuring Paul Desmond on sax, this is one of the quintessential "cool jazz" recordings
