Whatever floats your boat. In MY opinion, its chickenshit to use dogs to hunt bear. Period.I love all animals, so hunting them and using ALL of the animal is fine. Hunting to mount their head on a wall is cowardly. Probably the same kinda guys that use dogs are the same ones that have those rubber balls hanging from the back end of their monster trucks on the back bumper. Compensation for lack of any of their own.
That aside bear hunting with dogs is both a political and cultural issue here in Virginia.
A proposed ban comes-up every few years, mainly due to the hunters following their dogs onto private property without the owner's permission.....It's called fair chase.
Virginia's eastern hunters loth the practice and would see it banned but western hunters love it. Much of it is due to the border regions where on one side of the blue ridge it's allowed and the other it isn't, same with hunting deer with dogs in the piney woods/swamp eastern regions of the state. There they can run deer with dogs.....Not sure about bear.
The closest to being banned statewide (bear) was when bear were being live trapped in my region (professional bear trappers) and toted to the western region and being turned loose to be run by dogs.
There was no regulation against live trapping bear at the time. We stopped that shit cold once it was discovered. I caught a "convoy" moving out of the hollow we hunted. They had six bear they were moving.
I called the farmer on the end of the only road out and he called the game warden, parked a tractor with a hay bailer on the road, pretended it was broke down, and blocked the road till the game warden got there.
The game warden could find no regulation either way but he made the trappers turn the bear they had trapped loose when they could not produce any landowner permissions to be trapping on their property.
The trappers were none too happy about it but by then the State Police and SD had showed-up. It was getting to be quite a party.
LOL.....By the time they were given the bum's rush I bet there were 30-40 irate residents there....Even the Park Ranger and an ambulance from the VFD showed up.
Given Virginia is much more left-leaning now and transplants are taking the place of the older more understanding and traditional Virginians I suspect the practice of running bear with dogs has more years behind it than it has in front of it.
